Malahide

This project involved the full refurbishment of a period cottage, and the creation of single storey extension to the rear.Extensive refurbishment and extension to an existing semi-detached dwelling.

The existing layout of the house resulted in dark rooms with no connection to the garden. We opened up the rear of the house, ensuring the extension was taking full advantage of the morning and evening sun and positively embraced the garden.

A combination of full height glazing, flush roof lights and clerestory glazing ensures that the extension and existing house are flooded with light throughout the day.

“In seeking architectural advice for the comprehensive renovation and extension of The Rise in Malahide we were excited to engage the “Develop Your Home” team led by Sean and Deirdre Mc Mullan. We knew that they were very familiar with Malahide and their office was exceptionally adjacent . We understood very clearly there were a number of significant challenges that would require top creative and technical solutions. While our house was not a conserved example we were happy to be in a special conservation zone and to respect that as a privilege. From the start the Develop Your Home team exceeded our expectations finding imaginative solutions to all of the challenges from increasing light and optimizing the useable space inside and outside. An extra staircase was discretely accommodated to access an attic room office at no loss of floor or hall space – a simply brilliant solution that we could never have imagined. We also find that how the rear of the house was offset to connect with nature and the garden and to flood the kitchen with light was quite exceptional and original.

Throughout the preparation, planning, tendering and build the relationship was perfect from our viewpoint. Importantly the service provided was comprehensive including house, interiors and garden. The result was that the team working together created a new home that worked perfectly for us and respected all the finer points of good architecture in a sensitive area as well as great detailing which is ultimately so important.
